LDR RESPONDS TO RECENT TORNADOES IN ALABAMA

Tornados have struck Jefferson Co Alabama today, Jan 23, 2012, killing 20 people and injuring at least 100 people.  Since April 27, 2011, LDR Ohio has provided support to the Alabama Lutheran congregations in Jefferson Co/Cullman/Gardendale/Tuscaloosa areas.  The LDR Ohio shower trailer is currently in Gardendale, AL, Jefferson Co. Long term recovery volunteers are scheduled for Cullman, however, volunteers are needed for debris removal. Monetary donations are needed to help send volunteer teams and emergency supplies.  Contact Mary Woodward, LDR Ohio Disaster Coordinator by e-mail or at 740-509-1132 if you are able to assist.  Send monetary donations to LDR Ohio, 810 Main St., Caldwell, Ohio  43724.

LDR of Ohio will be assisting in the Long Term Recovery (rebuilding and repair) for 1,005 households during 2011.  These 1,005 families in 12 counties lost everything and many did not have any flood insurance and will not receive any government help as there is no FEMA declaration.  LDR of Ohio has case managers in place in each area:  Mercer, Auglaize, Marion, Richland, Cuyahoga, Summit and Stark counties and contiguous counties. Skilled volunteers are needed as well as in-kind donations of furniture and appliances.  Trailers and the semi are available in any areas for congregations to fill with their donations and monetary donations are needed for special needs of families and for purchase of building supplies that are not donated.  Donations may be sent to LDR of Ohio, 810 Main St., Caldwell, Ohio  43724.

So far, Lutheran congregations have provided 11 volunteer teams for early response, donated 8 trailers of furniture and appliances and provided volunteer case management in Cuyahoga and Logan counties.

LDR Ohio's Mission

Bringing hope and healing

The mission of Lutheran Disaster Response is to bring God's gift of hope and healing to a disastrous situation.  Lutheran Disaster Response is the outcome of expressions of the Lutheran church (congregations, districts, synods, and social ministry organizations) working interdependently.  In addition, Lutheran Disaster Response recognizes and honors the efforts of other community resources and seeks to avoid duplication in meeting needs.  It is the intent of Lutheran Disaster Response not only to be present at the time of crisis, but also to be present throughout the stages of disaster recovery. Lutheran Disaster Response seeks to serve Lutheran congregations and their members as well as the wider community.

Disaster Plan defines roles and responsibilities
The Lutheran Disaster Response Ohio (LDR Ohio) Preparedness Plan represents a shared understanding of roles and responsibilities of Lutheran expressions of church partnering in disaster response in Ohio.
